The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense regarding him since they are non-believers or agnostics or nones. The obvious and clear fact that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a type of profound affection focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
