Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
