An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
